Danica Patrick: 11 Bold Predictions for the Rest of Her Season

Danica Patrick is out to prove she is more than just a pretty face as she rolls through the remaining eight races she is scheduled to run in NASCAR's Nationwide Series this year.

Patrick has won over a great many fans, with not a few being women. There are still the staunch naysayers who doubt she will ever be a threat to win a race in NASCAR, but the petite firecracker is out to prove them wrong.

The driver of the No. 7 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet for JR Motorsports ran a baker's dozen worth of races in 2010. This year she is running one less race with her next one in NASCAR being shortly after she attempts to fulfill her dream of winning the Indy 500 with the IndyCar series.

Her first year with stock cars was a bit chaotic as she attempted to learn the new lingo, the feel of a heavy fendered car and how to handle the fender-benders that came her way while racing with the boys.

Patrick found herself having to refocus each time she flipped from one series to the other with her open-wheel car being so much different from the cars of NASCAR.

This season she once again finds herself going back and forth between the series, but this year she isn't dogged by the newness of racing in a stock car series.

Time will wind down this year and Patrick will need to choose the direction she wants to take her racing career.

Let's take a stroll through 11 predictions, in no particular order, regarding Patrick's performance during the balance of the NASCAR Nationwide Series.

Some will give credence to these statements, and others will find them nearing the status of comical because of their beliefs about the diminutive driver.

See what you think!

Classic F1 2011 - Michael Schumacher

Michael Schumacher has chosen his five greatest all-time grands prix for the second edition of this year's new-look classic Formula 1 feature.

To those unfamiliar with the concept, BBC Sport has asked all the F1 drivers to name their five favourite races, and we will select one of them ahead of each grand prix this season to whet your appetites for the action to come.

World champion Sebastian Vettel started the ball rolling with his selection prior to the Australian Grand Prix, and now it is his friend and countryman's turn.

The drivers are free to choose whether they pick races from their own career, or those from the wider history of F1 that have resonated with them. And like Vettel, Schumacher has selected only races from his time in the sport.

Whereas the Red Bull driver made his F1 debut only in 2007, Schumacher's career dates back to 1991 and the 42-year-old has raided the memory banks to come up with what he considers, for different reasons, key highlights of that time.

Not all of them are races in which he starred. Some of them are intended to highlight his admiration for rivals. Some fulfil both aims.

In chronological order, and in his own words, this is Schumacher's list:

"The 1991 Spanish Grand Prix.

"This was one of the first few races of my career, but that's not why I remember it. It's for the wheel-to-wheel battle down the pit straight between Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell, when they came within inches of touching. It was two great drivers pushing each other to the edge, but with the respect to leave each other just enough room. It's one of the coolest moments I've seen in F1."

"The 1993 European Grand Prix.

"Not one of my greatest races - I spun out in the pouring rain. I've picked this because of Ayrton. My time racing against him was too short. He was a great talent, and I always have been impressed by his driving, and this race showed exactly why."

"The 1998 Hungarian Grand Prix.

"This race sums up the great relationship I had - and still have - with Ross Brawn. We were behind the McLarens of Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard for the first part of the race and Ross decided that the only chance of beating them was to switch to a three-stop strategy - one stop more than them. It was a brilliant plan but it wasn't easy. I still remember the radio message from Ross that I had to make up something like 25 seconds in 19 laps."

"The 2000 Belgian Grand Prix.

"I enjoyed many great battles with Mika Hakkinen, who was very fast and a very tough competitor, and this was one of the best. I got into the lead when it was wet early on, but as it dried up Mika had a big pace advantage and he caught up easily. I managed to fend him off for one lap, but on the next he pulled off a great move to pass me as we went either side of Ricardo Zonta's BAR."

"The 2000 Japanese Grand Prix.

"This is probably both the toughest and most beautiful race of my career. Mika and I were flat out all the way, really on the edge every lap on a great drivers' circuit with the world championship at stake. And the race was really tricky because of changing conditions in the drizzle. I managed to get out ahead after my final pit stop and won. What makes it all the more special was that it was my first world title for Ferrari - this race certainly is my personal number one."

As with Vettel, we have chosen one race to highlight in this blog - and how we could choose any other than Schumacher's number one?

In order to see this content you need to have both Javascript enabled and Flash installed. Visit BBC Webwise for full instructions. If you're reading via RSS, you'll need to visit the blog to access this content.

In addition, we have decided to make available the full BBC 'Grand Prix' highlights programme of the time from one of his other choices - the 1991 Spanish Grand Prix. You can watch it here.

You can also enjoy highlights of last year's Malaysian Grand Prix in both short and extended form.

The classic races will also be available on the red button on digital television in the UK. On satellite and cable they will be broadcast from 1900 BST on Tuesday 5 April until 0845 on Friday 8 April. On Freeview, they will be shown from 2215 on Tuesday until 0645 on Wednesday, on Thursday from 0415-0645 and again from 1915-2045.

A final word. In my last blog, I said that we would feature Schumacher's team-mate Nico Rosberg this time around. We were not able to do so because of unforeseen problems. His choices will appear later in the season.

Michael Waltrip Survives LeMans Test Day

Easter Sunday, test day, at the Circuit de la Sarthe: it was the day Michael Waltrip (USA) and Rob Kauffman (USA) had been waiting for. The day they got to drive the Ferrari F430 of the AF Corse team on the famous 13,629 km long circuit of the 24 hours of Le Mans.

On the Friday just after they arrived from a test at Magny Cours, they pedaled bicicles to get to know the circuit for the first time. Before that they just had to make do with watching videos. Now it was time for the real stuff.

Michael and Rob’s teammate Rui Águas (Portugal) started the morning session in the number 71 car. He did the 10 laps required to do as a Le Mans rookie, setting his fastest time at 4m.09s.351.

The second person in the car to do his required 10 laps was Rob Kauffman. Rob had to wait a little as it started to rain and as usual, not over the full length of the circuit. The team decided to wait for the circuit to dry before sending Rob out.

Rob went out and his times improved per ...

Hamlin and Logano To Swap Crew Chiefs

Daytona Beach, FL - Joe Gibbs Racing drivers Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano have both struggled through the first eight races of the Sprint Cup season. Hamlin's #11 Fed Ex team currently sits 17th in NASCAR Sprint Cup Standings, and Logano's #20 Home Depot team is back in 24th. But, Joe Gibbs Racing executives Joe and J.D. Gibbs have plans to turn things around.
Sources confirmed to Captain Thunder Racing.com that a crew chief swap has been discussed and is imminent between the #11 and #20 teams. The swap would send Denny Hamlin's crew chief Mike Ford to the #20 garage, and Logano's crew chief Greg Zippadelli to the #11 garage.
Zippadelli, once the crew chief for two-time Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart, will bring the championship experience to the #11 team that JGR feels Hamlin needs at this point in his career. Hamlin was on the cusp of a championship last season but folded down the stretch. Ford took much of that blame.
2011 has ...

Mercedes W212 E63 AMG

In standard Mercedes fashion, after the departure of the W211 E-class, the base version of the W212 came onto the scene. Soon after that, announcements were made for the coupe and convertible versions as well as the estate wagon. Different engine lines were introduced including the BlueTec Diesels and the standard line of V6s and V8s. The final piece of the puzzle was to add the AMG model. The W212 was to carry to same moniker as the outgoing model, but the new E63 AMG would be an entirely different car.

Mercedes first chose to use the 6.2-liter V8 in the previous generation E-class, but that car was truly made to house the 5.5-liter compressor unit of the E55. This new E63 had plans of being more civilized and more capable in every aspect. Competition in this segment gets stiffer every year and the other German brands all vie for supremacy. These cars are the ultimate sleepers, the ultimate executive sedan, and the ultimate autobahn sled.

People who drive the Mercedes E-class are among the most loyal in the automotive industry; they tend to buy the new generation as soon as possible. Many AMG owners are the same way and for that reason, Mercedes was also careful to make changes that would not rattle the cage too much. Everything has changed for the E63 AMG, but somehow it all feels so familiar?and awesome.

Zagato TZ3 Stradale

The XII Villa D?Este Concours d?Elegance which took place in April 2010 gave way for Andrea Zagato to present the first step of his "Project TZ" with the 2010 Alfa Romeo TZ3 Corsa. This project was set in motion to honor 100 years of production and the long tradition of race Alfas with Zagato bodies. Fast forward to this year’s Pebble Beach Concours and Zagato is back with the second step of the "TZ Project", the Zagato TZ3 Stradale. The Stradale will be based on a 2010 Dodge Viper by utilizing its rolling chassis, engine, gearbox, suspension, etc. It is completely road legal, but will never get to see the production block.

The original TZ3 Corsa was originally built for German Alfa Romeo Zagato collector Martin Kapp while he was attending the Zandvoort Tribute. The Stradale is in no way related to the Corsa, except for the fact that they are both part of the "TZ Project." The TZ3 Stradale features a carbon fiber body with the same dimensions and weight of the Dodge Viper. It will be powered by a 4.2 liter V8 engine.

Before the car’s official debut at the Villa D’Este, Zagato has revealed the first details on the TZ3 Stradale, a vehicle that will be limited to only 9 units worldwide.

UPDATE 04/28/2011: This review has been updated with the official images and details. Hit the jump for the full details.

THOMAS SETS AA/SA RECORDS WITH V-10 DRAG PAK

Less than one month after making its competition debut, the 2011 Mopar® Challenger V-10 Drag Pak is already rewriting the NHRA record books.
4-7-11_2S_077
Dave Thomas, of Westchester, Pa., powered his 2011 Mopar Challenger V-10 Drag Pak to a record-setting 9.43-second elapsed time (ET) at 143.90 mph during a test session on Thursday, April 7 at the NHRA Division 1 National Open event at Atco (N.J.) Raceway (the test session allowed for record attempts). Thomas captured both the ET and mph records in the AA/SA class just two weeks after taking ownership of his Mopar Drag Pak, and with only a few passes under his belt in the new V-10-powered beast.

“In less than one month of competition, our 2011 Mopar Challenger V-10 Drag Pak has made its presence known in the NHRA Sportsman ranks,” said Pietro Gorlier, President and CEO of Mopar, Chrysler Group’s service, parts and customer-care brand. “Mopar is the only source for racers who want to purchase a factory-built, V-10-powered race-ready package car.”

Jeff Gordon Says Richmond Will Be A Guessing Game

Jeff Gordon has won twice at Richmond, but he thinks this weekends Sprint Cup race under the lights will be a guessing game. The race is scheduled to go green around 7:30pm, with sunset roughly 30-minutes later.
“It’s tough trying to guess what the track is going to do from day to night,” said Gordon. “The track will change a lot from the start of the race to the end, so we’ll need to keep up with those changes.
“Good communication throughout the race is needed to keep up with – or stay ahead of – those changing conditions.”
“I love Richmond, and I don’t know of another driver that doesn’t like this track.” “But it is a very challenging short track."
“One of the keys to going fast here is getting the DuPont Chevrolet to turn the middle of the corner. But it’s tough to get the car to turn the middle without getting the car too loose in and too loose...

Toyota will be launching its new Entune infotainment system later this year - a product that pairs with a customer's Internet- and Bluetooth-equipped smartphone to bring a host of applications right into the car's navigation screen. Entune is the Japanese automaker's answer to Ford's SYNC system, and we recently had the chance to get a first-hand look at Toyota's latest creation inside of the upcoming 2012 Prius V.

Entune made its official debut at CES back in January, combining functional apps like Bing search and real-time XM information (traffic, weather, fuel prices, sports and stocks) with entertainment features like Pandora and iHeartRadio. What's more, Entune adds restaurant booking capability via OpenTable and allows you to research movie times through MovieTickets.com. Of course, there's a slate of safety features like collision notification and roadside assistance, similar to those found in Lexus' Enform system.

We sat down inside the 2012 Prius V with Toyota's corporate manager for advanced technology, Jim Pisz, to see exactly how Entune works. Pisz tells us that the Prius V will be the first Toyota vehicle to feature Entune, but that we will likely see it spread to higher-volume models like the Camry and Tacoma by the end of the year.

In all, Entune looks to be a pretty slick system. The touch-screen display is easy to navigate, though it isn't as visually appealing as the Blue Oval's MyFord Touch. See a full walk-through of Entune for yourself in the video after the jump. As an added bonus, click here to see an Entune hands-on from our friends at Engadget, as well.

Editor's Note: Because Entune pairs to a smartphone, if there's a lengthy loss of signal at any time, that will cause Entune to become temporarily unresponsive. This happened during our preview outside of New York's Plaza Hotel, and thus, the video begins after Pisz restarted the system.

Red Bull under the spotlight

Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel celebrate with Red Bull boss Christian Horner on the podium © Getty Images
Sections of the international media have questioned Red Bull's strategic approach to the world championship. After Sebastian Vettel won the Brazilian Grand Prix from the team's points leader Mark Webber at Interlagos, Der Spiegel noted: "Red Bull gives (Fernando) Alonso wings". Not switching the places means that Spaniard Alonso can take his Ferrari to just second place this weekend in Abu Dhabi and be champion, whereas the alternative strategy would have set up Webber for a straight fight. "It is not easy for Webber to drive in a team that considers him a burden to be up against Vettel," said La Gazzetta dello Sport. Tuttosport noted that it seems "the Austrian team would be happier to lose than to see Webber beat Vettel". "No team orders at Red Bull. Another own goal," headlined La Repubblica. Joan Villadelprat wrote in his El Pais column: "Had Red Bull opted for Webber a few races ago, the Australian would probably now be champion." Red Bull, however, is unrepentant. Team owner Dietrich Mateschitz told Salzburger Nachrichten newspaper that "second under proper conditions can often be more valuable than a first". But there is a feeling that the team is not simply giving up the fight for the drivers' title. One columnist in Brazil's Globo wondered if Vettel's radio message in Abu Dhabi might sound something like 'So ... Mark is faster than you'. "I'm always in favour of leaving the fight on the track with equal chances for both sides," said Rubens Barrichello. "But I wonder if they would do that if the situation was in reverse. ?Mark has done a great job this year and he has been told by his team what position he is in," said Lewis Hamilton. "Against adversity he has kept at it. I want to see Mark win." Webber believes that, if a strategy is deployed, it will only be on the "last lap" of the season this weekend. "Sebastian is part of a team," said Niki Lauda, who believes Webber should be backed fully by Red Bull. "If he does anything it should be helping Webber and not just on the last lap." Webber is quoted by Bild newspaper: "It makes sense. Otherwise it would mean that Ferrari's team orders would have paid off for Fernando." Red Bull team boss Christian Horner hints that sense will ultimately prevail. "We have already given too many presents to Fernando this year," he is quoted by Autosprint.

Kyle Busch To Whoop-Up On Locals In Late Model Race

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (April 20, 2011) - Kyle Busch Motorsports announced today that Kyle Busch will enter the TD Bank 250 Late Model event at Oxford Plains Speedway in Oxford, Maine on Sunday July 24. Busch will tune up for Sunday's main event by running the Pro All Star Series Super Late Model 150 race on Saturday, July 23.
The Las Vegas native is returning to the 3/8-mile oval for the first time since running in back-to-back TD Bank 250's in 2005 and 2006. Busch led 70 laps of the 2005 event and had a straightaway lead before finishing sixth after making a late-race pit stop. In 2006, he came from the 20th starting spot to win the consolation race and was leading the feature before engine problems relegated him to a 22nd-place finish.
"It's no secret that I love to race, so I'll be spending my weekend off from the Sprint Cup Series in July running the late model races at Oxford Plains Speedway," said Busch. "The track is a lot of fun to drive. It'...

Alonso the new favourite

Fernando Alonso is the new favourite for the title © Getty Images
Fernando Alonso is the new favourite to win the Formula One drivers? title, said David Coulthard in his column for The Telegraph.
?He is the man with the momentum and, on the same basis that I backed Mark Webber to win the title before Korea, is now my favourite to claim the world title in Abu Dhabi on Nov 14. ?When the cars are so evenly-matched you have to back the man in possession. Especially when that man is a two-time world champion and arguably the finest driver of his generation.?
The Mirror?s Byron Young drew comparisons between Alonso and seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher as the Spaniard bids to become the sport?s youngest ever triple world champion.
?Like Schumacher, Alonso accepts no opposition within his team. Ultimately he fell out with McLaren over their refusal in 2007 to bring Lewis Hamilton to heel. ?He returned to Renault on condition he was No.1, only to be at the centre of the Singapore cheat scandal - engineered to hand him victory. ?The Spaniard has always denied involvement but at the German GP in July he was brazen enough to radio Ferrari to rein in team-mate Felipe Massa so he could start the winning streak that has taken him to the brink of history.?

Brilliant Hamilton brings season alive

Lewis Hamilton was fighting back the tears as he prepared to go out on to the podium after winning the Chinese Grand Prix. It had, he said, felt like "an eternity" since his last victory, in the Belgian Grand Prix last August. After he has come down to earth, he might well think it was worth the wait. This was - Martin Brundle and David Coulthard agreed - one of the greatest performances of Hamilton's career.

A thrilling race, in which it was impossible to pick a winner until very close to the end, put an end to Sebastian Vettel's domination of the 2011 season. From looking like his Red Bull had the pace to win every race, the world champion now knows he faces a fight.

From the very beginning of the season, it has looked like Hamilton would be the man giving the Red Bulls their closest challenge, but events had transpired in the previous two races to prevent him taking the fight to Vettel.

In China, though, Hamilton finally got the chance he had been waiting for and the result was one of the most exciting Formula 1 races for a very long time.

It ebbed and flowed, the advantage swaying one way and then the other between four teams and five different drivers, all coming together in a thrilling final few laps as the various strategies chosen by the different teams merged.

In order to see this content you need to have both Javascript enabled and Flash installed. Visit BBC Webwise for full instructions. If you're reading via RSS, you'll need to visit the blog to access this content.

What allowed it all to happen was both Hamilton and team-mate Jenson Button beating Vettel, who started from pole position, away from the grid. That demoted the German to third place on the first lap and prevented him from unleashing the full pace of the Red Bull and building an advantage he could then defend for the rest of the race.

Instead, Vettel spent the first part of the race bottled up behind the McLarens and from that position Red Bull made what eventually turned out to be a critical error - to do only two pit stops compared to the three of McLaren.

For a long time, it looked like it would work - starting from when Button made the astonishing error of stopping at the Red Bull pit instead of his McLaren one as he and Vettel came in for the first time.

That put Vettel ahead of both McLarens, into clear air and seemingly on course to cruise to victory. But it soon became clear it would not be as simple as that. He did not close on the leading Mercedes of the impressive Nico Rosberg as quickly as might have been expected, and neither was he pulling away from Felipe Massa's Ferrari behind him.

As the race developed, it soon became clear that it was turning into a classic F1 strategy battle - two stops versus three.

Had this been last year, with more durable tyres, the two-stoppers - Vettel and Massa - would have won out, as they were in front by the time all the leading runners had completed the stops.

But the deliberately rapid degradation of the new Pirelli tyres means that races are no longer about track position going into the final stages. Because the tyres can lose their edge so quickly, they are about who has the most grip in the closing laps. It is no good being in front if you do not have the grip to defend your position.

That created a brilliant spectacle - as was the idea when Pirelli were asked to design tyres in this way. Once everyone had completed their pit stops, Hamilton was in fourth place, and on tyres with much more grip than Vettel, Massa and Rosberg in the first three positions.

Hamilton's passing moves on those three got better and better - peaking with a superbly audacious dive down the inside of Vettel into the 150mph Turn Seven to take the lead. It was, as even Vettel had to admit, "a good move".

But arguably the best of all was the overtake that made the victory possible - taking what at the time was second place from Button into Turn One on lap 35, with 21 laps to go.

It is not the easiest of places to pass - there is no sharp braking into that corner; the cars dive in and slow progressively as it gets tighter and tighter through nearly a complete circle. Hamilton seemed to catch Button unawares and there was a nervy moment when the older man suddenly realised his team-mate was there.

Button had a little wobble as he made room for Hamilton, and up on the pit wall team principal Martin Whitmarsh had his heart in his mouth. But it worked out and Hamilton had three laps to make up some time before his final stop.

"It felt absolutely incredible and was probably one of the best races I've ever competed in," Hamilton told BBC Sport's F1 Forum after the race. "It was one of the best grand prix wins I can remember."

It was indeed a quite superb drive, probably his best in the dry, and one that certainly ranks up there with his wet-weather wins at Japan 2007, Silverstone 2008 and Spa last year.

It was also a timely reminder that for all Vettel's impressive run of wins and pole positions at the end of last year and the beginning of this, there are a few other drivers out there who are at least a match for him if they are provided with the right equipment and circumstances.

Among them, Hamilton is right up at the top - and this win has closed the gap to Vettel in the championship to 21 points. Suddenly, a season that had looked poised to be a Red Bull walkover has come alive.

The key themes of the narrative are still not absolutely clear.

One, it seems, will be Red Bull's struggles with Kers. These again proved an Achilles heel for the team - Webber struggled with the system through the weekend, and it malfunctioned on Vettel's car in the race, just as it did in Malaysia a week ago.

Another will clearly be the impact of the tyres and the controversial moveable rear wing, or DRS as it is known in F1 jargon. For ultra-purists, there is an argument that the racing, while exciting, feels a little artificial at times.

As Webber, whose fabulous recovery drive ironically made him one of the biggest beneficiaries of the massive grip differences between old and new tyres, put it: "I'm still not a huge fan of how it is; sometimes the overtakes are not all that genuine because the guys don't have anything to fight back with."

But after a race as good as this, how much does that matter?

Chris Winters wants to restore a part of drag racing history. The former Modified eliminator racer wants to renovate the legendary Wayne County Opel back wayne_county_01to the same specs when it was a terror in the old Modified eliminator.

There’s only one issue. He can’t find the car.

Could F1 go pay-per-view?

Formula 1's ability to generate major news stories above and beyond the excitement of the racing has never been in doubt, and this week has been no exception. No sooner had the dust settled on Lewis Hamilton's brilliant victory in the Chinese Grand Prix than reports emerged that Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation was considering buying the entire sport.

The stories appeared first on Murdoch-controlled Sky News, quickly followed by the Murdoch-controlled Times newspaper, and they certainly set tongues wagging within F1.

The prospect of the sport being taken off free-to-air television - in the UK, it is currently on the BBC, which took over the contract from ITV in 2009 - and put on pay-per-view has also created debate on social network sites.

So could it happen?

Given that this is F1, it is no surprise that not only is there no definitive answer to that question, but that any explanation of the situation is complicated. I'll try to make it as straightforward as possible.

There are two inter-related issues here - who owns F1's commercial rights, and where it is broadcast. We'll leave the ownership of the sport aside until later and deal with the issue of free-to-air versus pay-per-view first.

F1 is governed by a document called the Concorde Agreement, which binds together the teams, governing body the FIA and the commercial rights holders, currently the private equity group CVC Capital Partners, represented by F1 commercial boss Bernie Ecclestone.

The Concorde Agreement is secret - so secret that the teams are not even allowed to retain their own copy - but it is known that it contains a clause which dictates that, in major territories, F1 has to be broadcast on free-to-air television.

In order to see this content you need to have both Javascript enabled and Flash installed. Visit BBC Webwise for full instructions. If you're reading via RSS, you'll need to visit the blog to access this content.

The reason for this is that free-to-air TV has much bigger audiences than pay-per-view, and the bigger the audience, the greater the chance of bigger sponsorship deals and therefore financial security and, for the teams, on-track success.

Take F1 off free-to-air TV and the audience would shrink dramatically. The smaller the audience, the less keen sponsors are to be involved, and the less money those that are involved would pay to the teams and Ecclestone.

However, the current Concorde Agreement runs out at the end of 2012, and negotiations to scope out a new one are beginning - at exactly the time that the global economic climate is making the commercial environment increasingly tough.

So teams are about to discuss the contents of a new Concorde Agreement at a time when several are struggling to raise funds and when the amount of money available from free-to-air broadcasters is, in a lot of cases, stagnating or reducing.

In that environment, might the F1 teams be tempted to try to secure their own short-term financial futures by removing the bar to pay-per-view in the Concorde Agreement, so they can free up the possibility of a big pay-day from, for example, Murdoch?

The short answer is that they don't know yet. While teams are beginning to focus on the need for a new Concorde Agreement, they are, in the words of one team principal, "nowhere" on the subject of broadcasting.

It is going to be a thorny and protracted debate, because so much is wrapped up in it:

F1 teams are typically short-sighted and self-interested when it comes to such matters - so it is not hard to imagine that some might see the appeal of Sky's millions as a way of securing their own short-term futures.

The risk with that would be that by reducing its audience, F1 could also reduce its appeal, and put its longer-term survival at risk.

You might think that the teams with least resources at the moment - both from TV revenues and sponsorship - would be most keen on a commercial model that raised more money from pay-per-view. But you would be wrong.

I put these arguments to the Virgin team's sporting director, Graeme Lowdon, who said: "My view is that the sport is served much better in the world of free-to-air for all the reasons you mention.

"F1 is an incredibly popular sport. It's talked about by people. It's the ultimate team game and the drivers are the heroes. If you remove the majority of the public, it removes a lot of the spirit of what F1 is about, as well as the ability for the teams to stand on our own two feet without reliance on the commercial rights holder.

Red Bull driver Mark Webber is interviewed by television crews

The BBC is in the middle of a five-year contract to broadcast F1. Photo: Getty

"It's more important that we have an agenda that grows the popularity of the sport than one that gazes inwardly.

"F1 is way bigger than pay-per-view and deserves its place on the global stage with the viewing figures it gets. We would be concerned if the sport was heading towards a pay-per-view only model.

"The biggest mistake any team can make is to assume you'll never be at the bottom. Look at Williams. They have called it themselves a poor start to the season - and that's an extremely good team. Anyone who assumes they'll always win and argues the financial model on those lines at some stage could come a cropper.

"There are a lot of examples in football - lots of teams have built their model on winning the championship. But only one can win and (beyond that) there's wreckage.

"We have tried to highlight that the model for F1 needs to make sense for the team with the least resources.

"The attraction of free-to-air is it gives you more opportunity to diversify your revenue streams. If we go pay-per-view and find people use other (TV) channels, then we're at risk. At least if you have underlying popularity, you can get your revenue.

"I'd be surprised if a race headlong into pay-per-view would provide F1 with the defences (it needs). Free-to-air provides you with so much flexibility - it means the business is less at risk than if you put all your eggs in one basket."

Of course, there is an opposing view - as expressed by English rugby and cricket executives earlier this week as Sky Sports celebrated its 20th birthday - that pay-per-view can re-invigorate a sport and provide it with much-needed revenues to fund grass roots and youth development. On that subject, the Telegraph has quoted a News Corp source saying the company would "transform" F1.

The issue of who owns F1 is clearly both linked to the debate over free-to-air versus pay-per-view and separate from it.

Ecclestone himself says the potential News Corp sale is a non-story. He told the BBC: "I know Rupert and [News Corp international boss] James Murdoch and Carlos Slim, and if they wanted to do anything they would contact me direct. And they haven't."

Elsewhere, he added: "We would not sell to a media company because it would restrict the ability to negotiate with other broadcasters."

One senior insider said this was one of "Bernie's curve balls - he's always throwing them up; they don't necessarily amount to anything".

And a team principal said he did not think CVC was looking to cash in on its investment in F1. "I think CVC are in it for the long term," he said.

CVC spent $1.8bn on buying F1 in 2006, following the collapse of the previous owners for financial reasons. CVC got into debt doing so, but those debts are scheduled to be paid down within the next two years, after which it can enjoy the huge profits F1 makes.

Any potential sale of F1 is complicated by the fact that the FIA has a veto which it can use if it does not approve of the potential buyer - referred to by Mosley as the 'Don King clause'. And where Todt stands on the issue of News Corp is not known.

Some F1 insiders are sceptical that the story was grounded in reality. "It's built up some momentum pretty quickly," said one, "and I suspect it will die away just as fast."

That may or may not be the case. But the wider conversation is only going to grow in importance over the coming months.

The ownership of F1 is tied up in the Concorde Agreement negotiations. If the teams want a greater split of revenues, that by definition means less for whoever owns the sport. And how does CVC feel about that?

The FIA is also unhappy about its financial arrangements with Ecclestone and CVC. Will it ultimately side with the teams against CVC, with CVC against the teams, or be one of three separate entities all fighting their own corner?

Whether Murdoch is involved in it or not, then, this story is not going away.

It'...

Jimmie Johnson Edges Clint Bowyer by 0.002 Seconds, Wins Aaron's 499 at Talladega

TALLADEGA, Ala. -- Jimmie Johnson has won the Aaron's 499 at Talladega Superspeedway, dipping to the inside and beating Clint Bowyer by 0.002 seconds - matching the closest finish in Sprint Cup history. Four pairs of cars surged toward the line Sunday for a typical Talladega finish, and it took a replay to show that Johnson edged Bowyer by about a foot. Johnson was pushed across the line by Dale Earnhardt Jr., who finished fourth. Pole-sitter Jeff Gordon, squeezed between Bowyer and Johnson and pushed by Mark Martin, settled for third. Kevin Harvick, who was Bowyer's pusher, wound up fifth....

Talladega Dateline: Junior Nation Holds Their Breath

Junior Nation gets a double dose of their beloved driver at Talladega Superspeedway as they hold their collective breath awaiting a win.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. will drive the No. 7 Suave Chevrolet in the NASCAR Nationwide Aaron's 312.  Appearances in this series for the owner/driver at JR Motorsports are sparse.

Earnhardt Jr., who is currently sixth in the Sprint Cup series point standings, will attempt to end his 100-race winless streak in the Aaron's 499.

The driver of the Amp Energy/National Guard No. 88 is the emotional favorite to win if his fans have their way.

A victory at the track where his father had his last win in 2000 would be that much sweeter for Junior.

Mass reaction by fans, whether it is positive or negative for a driver, is always an interesting phenomenon. For those who consider themselves solid members of Junior Nation, the reaction can elicit incredible enthusiasm, even at driver introductions.

No other active driver can evoke emotion in NASCAR like Earnhardt Jr. Even casual race fans that find themselves in the grandstands at a NASCAR Sprint Cup race may have a glazed look when the No. 88 takes the lead and the crowd goes wild.

For fans of Earnhardt Jr., the wait for the next win is exhausting. The chance of a double victory with him running in two series on the same weekend offers a glimpse of racing nirvana.

Talladega is indeed Earnhardt territory with the history of a record 10 wins for the late seven-time NASCAR Winston Cup (Sprint Cup) champion.

Five of the 18 career Cup wins for Earnhardt Jr. came at Talladega Superspeedway when he drove for Dale Earnhardt, Inc.

Talladega is a wild-card track because of the variables that play into the outcome of the race.

The big wreck, known as the "Big One" can be a points maker or heartbreaker. The two-by-two couplings, radio communications, exchanges and potential over-heating are all major factors in the strategy to run for a win on this restrictor-plate track.

As Junior Nation watches from the stands, view their televisions, listen to a radio or use some other electronic media, they will hold their collective breath.

Is it possible their driver, Dale Jr., will make his way to Victory Lane at Talladega? If he does, the media will flood every outlet with the comeback stories and his fans everywhere will exude feelings of euphoria.

A win by Junior will not only restore the faith of his fans, but bring much needed attention to NASCAR.

Whether you are a Earnhardt Jr. naysayer or avid fan, hold on tight for the vortex of air from those fans who are waiting to exhale if indeed he wins the Aaron's 499.

Five ways to improve F1

Emerson Fittipaldi in his heyday © Sutton Images
In an interview in the Times, former world champion Emerson Fittipaldi?s outlined his five-point plan to enhance Formula One. Cut costs ?They spend a fortune in wind-tunnel testing alone. Reduce costs and the slowest teams would catch up and make it more even.? Limit downforce ?They need to reduce enormously the downforce in the cars, the only way to bring back overtaking. We need more mechanical grip so that you have longer braking areas, can set up the car coming out of a corner, get in the slipstream and then overtake.? Close the pitlane ?When the safety car goes out they should close the pitlane. Now it?s just a lottery.? Lift ban on team orders ?It is a very stupid rule. It?s why they are called teams, it?s why they have two cars. If a driver is leading in the championship, everything has to go in his favour. What is wrong with that? It?s so easy for teams to camouflage their orders anyway. All they need to do is tell one guy on the radio he has a problem with his brakes. They can bend the rules very easily. In the old days they would even swap cars, so why do we have this ban now?? Retain traditional grands prix ?These places are the soul of racing. The Americas are under-represented. We have Canada back, but there is no USA, no Argentina, no Mexico. We need to stay in the heartlands.?

Reports: Volvo denies talk of Saab takeover, Muller looking for partner in China

Saab logo detail

It looks like Volvo and Saab won't be teaming up to create one Swedish carmaker to rule them all. According to Reuters, Volvo has made it clear that the company has had no talks with Saab about buying the besieged automaker and that none are scheduled to take place. The Swedish newspaper De Telegraf had previously reported that the Swedish government was urging Volvo into talks with Saab about a potential takeover. The move would mean that a government loan previously granted to Saab by the European Investment Bank would have a greater chance of being repaid.

Saab has hit (further) rough waters in recent months with multiple supplier hiccups resulting in production stoppages including instances of the automaker being unable to pay for parts. In addition, sales fell well short of 2010 forecasts, resulting in a further cash crunch. The Swedish automaker has since performed a few economic stunts to get production rolling again, including selling the company's properties and re-leasing them at a lower cost.

In related matters, Automotive News reports that Saab CEO Victor Muller is looking to broker a deal with a Chinese automaker to help finance the company, although it is understood that Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. is not one of those parties. BAIC, you may recall, purchased old Saab assets (the previous generation 9-3 model, among other things) back in 2009 for $200 million, and it also expressed interest in buying Saab from General Motors before Muller's Spyker stepped in and completed the purchase.

Kasey Kahne's Allstate Ads and NASCAR's 25 Most Hilarious TV Commercials

It's no secret that the drivers in NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series are the best in the world at what they do. As they are the best race car drivers in the world, however, some of them may be hiding talents we didn't know they had.

One of those talents is acting. Any time you watch a race, there are plenty of opportunities to see your favorite drivers showing off their acting skills. The television airwaves are flooded with commercials featuring various NASCAR drivers.

Some of them are okay, some aren't bad, but there are some that are just down right hilarious. I am going to take a look at my 25 favorite commercials that feature NASCAR drivers. And for some of these guys, when their racing careers are over, maybe a trip to Hollywood should be on the agenda.

NASCAR Sprint Cup: Final Talladega Predictions by Team

Which team is the best at Talladega Superspeedway? Which drivers on each team will have the best finishes on Sunday? Which cars are most likely to end up as scrap metal?

Predicting what will happen at one of the craziest races of the year is next to impossible, but here are my rankings of each team and best attempts at previewing what to expect in the Aaron's 499 on Sunday.

1. Hendrick Motorsports

The drivers at Hendrick have unquestionably had more success at Talladega Superspeedway than the drivers on any other team.

Jeff Gordon has seven career wins, Dale Jr. has five (including four in a row in 2001-2003), Mark Martin has two, and Jimmie Johnson has one. However, none has won at the track since Gordon swept the races in 2007.

Best Finish: Dale Earnhardt Jr. He is due for a win and has been showing more speed and confidence in the last several weeks than he has in a long time. With his winless streak standing at an even 100 races, Talladega is the perfect place for him to break through for a victory, or at least solidify his position in the standings with a top-five finish.

Worst Finish: Mark Martin. He finished fifth and 11th at Talladega last season, but he has three finishes of 28th or worse in his last six races at the track. Martin is known to dislike restrictor plate racing, and don't be surprised if his day ends early.

2. Richard Childress Racing

RCR drivers won both Talladega races last fall, with Kevin Harvick taking the spring event and Clint Bowyer edging Harvick to take the checkered flag in the fall.

Either of those drivers is fully capable of winning a second career race at the track, but I'm going with a driver who has posted career-high finishes at every track but one so far this season.

Best Finish: Paul Menard. He finished a career-high second at Talladega to Tony Stewart in the fall 2008 race, and he has been consistently strong at restrictor plate tracks throughout his career. Menard ran well in the Daytona 500 and if he can avoid trouble, he'll be in the mix for the win at the end of the race.

Worst Finish: Jeff Burton. Burton has endured misfortune after misfortune in the 2011 season. Talladega is an unlikely place for his troubles to come to an end. Burton finished 32nd and 41st here last season, and has five finishes of 27th or worse in the last nine Talladega events.

3. Joe Gibbs Racing

JGR drivers hope the team's engineers have correctly diagnosed and solved the problems that led to a host of engine problems earlier this year and that their engines will last the entire race. If so, they should be running up front all race long.

Kyle Busch has one Talladega victory, and he and Denny Hamlin often hook up as drafting partners at plate tracks. However, neither is consistent at Talladega; Busch has just two top-10s at the track, while Hamlin has only four.

Best Finish: Joey Logano. He has three top-10s in four career Talladega starts. He's the most likely of the Gibbs bunch to stay out of trouble.

Worst Finish: Denny Hamlin. This one is a toss-up between Hamlin and Busch, who are each prone to poor finishes at plate tracks, but I'll give the nod to Hamlin for two reasons.

First, Busch is more likely to pull off a win (he has four top-2s at restrictor plate tracks, while Hamlin has none).

Second, Hamlin has been struggling mightily all season and the frustration is beginning to show in his communications with his team and crew chief Mike Ford. That is never a good thing when racing door-to-door and bumper-to-bumper for four hours.

4. Earnhardt Ganassi Racing

Back when EGR was Dale Earnhardt Inc., fans could count on seeing the DEI cars running up front and winning races, as often as not. Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Michael Waltrip won races at both Talladega and Daytona from 2001 to 2004.

These days, Jamie McMurray and Juan Pablo Montoya are solid at the plate tracks, but neither has won at Talladega with EGR. (McMurray won there in the fall of 2009, but was with Roush at the time.)

Best Finish: Montoya. I'm going with the drivers' overall records here. Montoya has an excellent average finish of 14.75 in his eight races at Talladega. He finished third in both 2010 races and sat on the pole last fall, and finished second in the spring 2008 race.

Worst Finish: McMurray has a win and a runner-up in the last three Talladega events, but his average finish is a mere 19.2. With just six top-10s in 17 races, the odds are in favor of Montoya having a better finish.

5. Penske Racing

Kurt Busch is possibly the best restrictor plate driver never to have won a race at Talladega or Daytona. Brad Keselowski, on the other hand, gained his only Sprint Cup win in this race two years ago, although he wasn't driving for Penske at the time.

Best Finish: Kurt Busch has six top-10s in his last ten trips to Talladega, and with his experience, he's as good a bet as anyone on the track to be in the mix at the end of the race. Finding a good drafting partner might be another matter, as he'll probably be the only Dodge running up front by that time.

Worst Finish: Brad Keselowski. He may have a Talladega win, but with his relative inexperience, he's more likely to find trouble. Keselowski finished 34th in this race last season.

6. Stewart-Haas Racing

SHR has Hendrick equipment, so they have the hardware to do well. Both drivers have also won races at restrictor plate tracks, although only Stewart has won at Talladega. They paced the field for the first practice on Friday, so look for them up front on Sunday.

Best Finish: Stewart has one career Talladega win to go along with nine top-5s and 12 top-10s in 24 career races. His average finish of 15.5 is respectable, due to DNFs in just four Talladega starts.

Worst Finish: Ryan Newman has seven top-10s in 18 Talladega events, which isn't bad, but he also has six DNFs and an average finish of just 20.6.

7. Roush Fenway Racing

RFR has had success at Talladega, but not with any of its present drivers. In fact, Matt Kenseth, Greg Biffle and Carl Edwards have been downright awful at the track, while usual fourth wheel David Ragan is a decent fantasy play for this weekend.

Best Finish: David Ragan. He has only two finishes worse than 17th at Talladega, to go along with three results of sixth or better in eight starts. For whatever reason, Talladega is the one track at which he's better than his teammates at avoiding trouble and bringing his car home in one piece.

Worst Finish: This could be any of the three, but I'll go with Greg Biffle. In 16 Talladega races, Biffle has four DNFs and just two top-10s. Ouch.

8. Red Bull Racing

One of Brian Vickers' two career Cup wins came at Talladega in 2006. Interestingly, Kasey Kahne finished second in that race, although neither was driving for Red Bull at the time.

Best Finish: Vickers has a better record than his teammate at 'Dega, with four top-10s, including three top-5s, in his last eight races at the track. He also has 69 laps led at Talladega, as opposed to just 24 for Kahne.

Worst Finish: Kahne has two runner-ups at Talladega, but other than that, he's struggled. His average finish is just 21.9, and he has just one top-20 since 2007.

9. Richard Petty Motorsports

Back in the day, Petty collected two of his 200 career wins and zero poles at the high banks of Talladega Superspeedway. Needless to say, it wasn't one of his favorite tracks. Currently, I suspect neither of his drivers list it among their favorite stops on the Sprint Cup circuit, either.

Best Finish: A.J. Allmendinger. I'd be shocked to see Allmendinger in the final top ten, but he finished higher than his teammate in both Talladega races last season, so I guess I should pick him to do so again. Even still, his 2010 finishes of 19th and 32nd don't exactly inspire confidence.

Worst Finish: Marcos Ambrose. The Tasmanian finished a surprising fourth in his Talladega debut in 2009, but since then he's finished 34th, 37th, and 34th. I don't expect that trend to improve on Sunday.

10. Michael Waltrip Racing

Michael Waltrip scored one of his four career victories at Talladega, but that came while driving for Dale Earnhardt Inc. Martin Truex Jr. has three top-10s at Talladega, but those all came with DEI (and its various permutations in the last few years).

Michael Reutimann, meanwhile, hadn't done better than 20th at the track until last season, when he broke through with a 14th-place result, and then surprised everyone with a fourth-place run last fall.

Best Finish: Michael Reutimann. Even with the good results he had last year at Talladega, Reutimann is unlikely to do as well on Sunday.

However, even with three DNFs in eight starts and an average finish of 22.6, Reutimann's stats are better than his teammate's. (Actually, I should pick Waltrip here, who is running this race. But I'm sticking to the regulars.)

Worst Finish: Martin Truex Jr. came to MWR from an organization with a strong history at plate tracks, but no longer has that confidence going for him.

He has three Talladega top-10s, which is better than Reutimann, but he has a whopping eight DNFs in just 12 races, leading to an ugly average finish of 25.2. That doesn't bode well, any way you look at it.

Other non-start-and-parkers

Robby Gordon has had a few good runs at Talladega over the years, with five top-10s to his credit. However, he's not the remaining driver with the best shot at a top finish on Sunday.

Best Finish: This is a toss-up between Regan Smith and David Gilliland. Smith crossed the finish line here first in 2008, but was disqualified for passing Tony Stewart below the yellow line coming out of Turn 4.

He had a strong car in the Daytona 500 before a late-race altercation led to an eight-place finish. Gilliland, meanwhile, had one of the best cars late and nearly pushed Carl Edwards to the win en route to a third-place finish.

Gilliland has one previous top-5 at Talladega and could do well if he can stay out of trouble.

Worst Finish: This is actually a trickier pick than it might seem. Travis Kvapil and Tony Raines are actually decent at Talladega. I'm going with Andy Lally, who has never run a Cup race at Talladega. He finished 33rd at the first restrictor-place race of the year, the Daytona 500.
