Aftermarket icon Joe Mondello, whose influence on drag racing cylinder heads can be traced to the 1950s, died April 5 following complications from surgery. He was 75.
Mondello was a part of the drag racing scene since the early days of the organized sport in California. In 1951, he raced at airports and dragstrips throughout Southern California and gained a reputation as one of the region’s top cylinder-head porters. In the early 1960s, he developed the Posi-Flow combustion chamber still utilized on some Chevrolet performance cylinder heads and designed open chamber big- and small-block Chevy cylinder heads and pistons long before Chevy did.
