After competing on-and-off in NHRA Pro Stock the past three years, 23-year-old Rickie Jones made his Pro Nitrous debut early in March in the Shakedown at Palm Beach at South Florida’s Palm Beach International Raceway (PBIR). He left suitably impressed.
“When you start this thing, compared to a 500-inch Pro Stock car, it’s a lot deeper sounding; it sounds really good. I like the exhaust coming out the side. The RPMs are lower, but you can really feel the power, the animal that it is,” Jones says. “These cars are really cool; they’ve got a lot of power, especially when the nitrous kicks on. That’s when the fun really starts.”
Jones had plenty of fun at the Shakedown, qualifying on top of a star-studded Pro Mod field with an impressive 3.84 pass before making it all the way to the final round where he finished runner-up to driving mentor Shannon Jenkins in a similarly prepped RJ Race Cars-built ’68 Camaro.
